CBD or cannabidiol, is one of the 60+ naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant.

And yes, THC, is another one of those compounds, which brings us to an important point. Because THC and CBD both yield from the marijuana plant many assume CBD can get you high. Since it’s the same plant, it does make sense, but is it true? Does it get you high?

For starters, don’t feel bad about asking whether or not CBD will get you high. We are asked multiple times every day, and it’s a great question. After all, shouldn’t we be aware of what’s going in our bodies and how it will affect us? Of course, we should.

That being said, let’s dive into the CBD and answer the question: “Will CBD get you high?”

The Short Answer: Absolutely not. While THC is psychoactive and can cause sedation, lethargy, dysphoria, and other negative effects; CBD is completely non-psychoactive, and will deliver the healing properties of the cannabis marijuana plant without getting you high.

The Long Answer: Well, this is going to get pretty in-depth, but for those of you looking for more of a scientific explanation, continue reading below!

Everything we are is essentially controlled by our Central Nervous System (CNS), which consists of our brain, our spinal cord, and our nerves. These components are connected throughout our entire body and control everything we do and experience. Within the CNS are different systems of receptors that carry out different functions of our body. One of the most important ones is the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the mammalian brain, that researchers believe controls our appetite, mood, pain sensation, memory, and more.

Within the ECS, are several different receptors, one of which is the CB1 receptor. When the CB1 receptor comes into contact with THC, it causes the psychoactive effects associated with “getting high;” however, when the CB1 receptor comes into contact with CBD, CBD actually blocks the THC from engaging with the CB1 receptor, effectively canceling out the psychoactive effects of THC. While inhibiting the effects of THC, CBD also activates other receptors in our brains, such as the adenosine receptor, the serotonin receptors, which control our mood, and how we feel, and the vanilloid receptor which helps to regulate pain. So while THC does provide the healing properties of the marijuana plant, it also causes negative side effects. So should consider with your doctor before consuming CBD and start always with a low dose.
